The public library won't renew my books that are due tomorrow a second time. Somehow, that doesn't seem like great customer service to me, but I guess it's been a long time since I worked in a public library, and we didn't bother with fines because it cost more than we were bringing in.

Why won't the library renew your books?
This is a crucial question because in the Los Angeles Public Library system(where I work) for example, if a book is on hold for someone else, it cannot be renewed - regardless of who is serving the customer. In that case it's a patron problem.
If, on the other hand, a clerk is being grumpy - that's definitely a customer service problem.
Sigh... they won't renew my books because I've renewed them once and that's the limit. It's not the clerk's fault, they're just someone stuck enforcing a stupid rule. If I call my own branch instead of the main renewals number, they'll probably do it no questions asked--it's just sort of stupid.
