I like to wander around campus when I have the time. It gets me out of my officle (cubice?) and out into fresh air, and it burns a few calories to boot. Today I found the Humanities and Social Sciences Building (not to be confused with the Social Sciences Building in the other direction), an imposing concrete relic of the Sixties or early Seventies that, like many buildings on this campus, consists of a tall central tower and two wings stretching out on either side. Russ, an coworker at my old job, told me when I got here that many years ago the Humanities and Social Sciences Building had an impressive graffiti staircase that was worth checking out, but we both thought there was a pretty good chance it was going to be long gone by now. It's not. Entering from the north side of the building, I cautiously walked around the outdoor walkway looking for something that might be the staircase. Hoping that a fire alarm wouldn't go off, I tried a quitely marked door and found a graffiti'd foyer, which looked promising. The next door led into a darkened room, also graffiti'd, and the next door the actual (well-lit) staircase: 8 floors of random, mostly positive and upbeat, graffiti--drawings, quotations, tags, whatever. I walked up and then back down, surprised that I didn't run into another human being the entire time. Back downstairs, I walked around the building and found the other staircase, marked (but apparently at least attemptedly painted over) as "Stairway to Heaven." The walls were bare.
